San Kawa Kendo Dojo

San Kawa was founded by Sensei Tony Hughes (6th Dan) in August 2002. Based in Rosebank it is one of the largest dojos in South Africa and its members regularly compete as part of the national kendo team in international competitions.

San Kawa is currently run by Sensei Brendan Dateling (5th dan) who took the mantle from Sensei Hughes in 2019.

San Kawa is a member of the South African Kendo Federation, a recognised federation in Africa. The SAKF is the representative body for Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo in South Africa and is affiliated to the Martial Arts South Africa (MASA), the International Kendo Federation (FIK) and the European Kendo Federation (EKF).

Kendo is an amateur activity in South Africa. All the instructors teach voluntarily and all dojo and SAKF funds are used for the promotion and support of kendo.
